Published: Feb. 26, 2025

In 1965, R. B. Woodward and Roald Hoffmann published five communications in the Journal of American Chemical Society that formed basis for what has been known as (W-H) rules. The last two these applied secondary molecular orbital interactions - is, involved atomic orbitals removed from primary reaction centers to explain so-called Alder endo-exo rule maximum overlap regiochemistry Diels-Alder then recently noted preference chair orientation over boat Cope reaction. This publication presents back stories latter W-H communications, based on a comprehensive examination Hoffmann's laboratory notebooks, more than 100 hours interviews with Hoffmann, other chemists, documents found both Woodward's archives.
