Abstract Soy protein adhesives have the advantages of low price and renewability but are limited by terrible bonding strength poor water resistance, which restricts practical application. Herein, inspired structure mussels organic-inorganic hybrid strengthening mechanism, a novel bio-based soy adhesive (SPI-RA-CSA) based on rosin acid derivative calcium sulfoaluminate was generated. According to optimization response surface methodology (RSM), best proportion SPI-RA6-CSA1 chosen. The dry wet shear strengths reached 1.52 1.35 MPa, respectively, were 70% 210% higher than original adhesive. Meanwhile, showed excellent coating performance even if it coated wood veneer. Highlights•A cold-set protein adhesive enabled by Pickering emulsion-templated microcapsules•The exhibits superior adhesion and storability•The strategy balances high reactivity long storability in adhesionSummaryCold-set adhesives (CPAs) show great advantages sustainability, eco-friendliness, cost effectiveness but suffer from weak poor as imposed the difficulty controlling molecular crosslinks. Here, we develop a robust, storable, controllable CPA microcapsules (PETMs). The PETMs are synthesized leveraging highly reactive isocyanates core phase for adhesion, cellulose nanofibers densified polyurea shell to present responsive, adjustable, stable nature. Also, inorganic magnesium oxide (MgO) binders introduced further strengthen via MgO-protein complexation. Our design not only enables (0.98 MPa wood) induced pressure also imparts with much-improved (high-strength maintenance at inferior conditions). This resolves conflict between offering promising direction development of high-performance bio-based satisfying practical demands.Graphical abstract
