Advancement in energy storage technologies is directly related to social development. As an advanced technology, supercapacitors (SCs) have gained significant attention owing their exceptional performance terms of density and power density. Electrodes are the most important components a supercapacitor cell; thus, this review primarily deals with various types transition metal-based electrodes. Specifically, bimetallic nickel cobalt (NiCo)-chalcogenides phosphides received great due preeminent specific capacitance, tunable electronic structure, redox chemistry, presence multiple oxidation states, morphological tenability. However, applications these materials practical hindered by volumetric expansion during charge/discharge, low rate-capability, cyclic stability. This highlights advancement three-dimensional (3D) NiCo-chalcogenides phosphide electrodes over two-dimensional (2D) as structure tends improve electrocatalytic activity stability NiCo-based hybrid devices. Researchers developed number modifications obtain optimized, enhanced materials. In addition, advances on metal organic framework (MOF)-derived 3D architecture for SCs discussed detail, performances also summarized. report outlines major challenges some issues increasing SCs, future research perspectives suggested.
