Carbocatalysis, i.e., catalysis by metal-free carbon-based materials, has recently emerged as a “green” alternative for several thermal-, electric-, and solar-driven chemical processes in the gas phase liquid phase. Indeed, addition to their more common role catalyst support, carbon materials can promote large variety of reactions, replacing metal or oxide catalysts. However, active sites are seldom identified properly quantified, making it impossible calculate turnover frequencies benchmark novel catalysts with those traditionally used. In order advance field, is essential correlate catalytic properties surface chemistry. this work, we review small selection reactions catalyzed emphasizing synthesis methodologies characterization techniques used identify sites, where relevant structure-activity relationships could be established.
