The mechanism of the molecular photoluminescence carbon dots (CDs) has gained much attention recently, due to several reports formation small fluorophore species at reaction conditions applied in CD synthesis. In this work, two novel green‐emitting are discovered postsynthetic mixtures citric acid (CA)–urea CDs and identified as 3‐(4‐hydroxy‐1,3,6‐trioxo‐5 H ‐pyrrolo[3,4‐ c ]pyridine‐7‐yl)‐2,6‐dioxo‐piperidine‐4‐carboxyamide (HTPPC) 7‐[(2,5‐dioxopyrrolidin‐3‐yl)methyl]‐4‐hydroxy‐5 ]pyridine‐1,3,6‐trione (DMHPPT). less‐considered covalent character interactions between fluorophores structure is revealed during first steps frequently studied CA–urea CDs. Thus, specific sites HPPT (4‐hydroxy‐1 ]pyridine‐1,3,6(2 ,5 )‐trione), involved bonds with CDs, identified; origin reactive synthesis mixture revealed; spectroscopic consequences binding demonstrated using steady‐state time‐resolved spectroscopy methods accompanied by quantum chemical modeling. hypothesis suggesting expense validated experimentally. nature bonding involving a double bond functionalities successfully expanded citrazinic fluorophores, that similar can be present other dot systems.
