Metal complexes have long played a pivotal role in analytical chemistry due to their ability detect and separate ions through the synergistic interaction between metal centers ligands. This functionality can be further enhanced by integrating non-covalently with various media, such as materials or separation platforms. Over past four decades, author has explored complex systems, including thiacalixarene–lanthanide(III) complexes, diradical platinum(II) MOF-74, which exhibit broad spectrum of functionalities spanning applications theranostics. Examples discussed this review include luminescent supramolecular sensors for soft-metal ions, upconverting near-infrared light-absorbing probes pH hydrophobic cavities, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), photoacoustic imaging, photothermal therapy, neutron capture therapy. The multifunctionality these systems arises from cooperative, synergistic, nature, underpinned non-covalent interactions among components. Analytical been, will continue be, cornerstone discovery development multifunctional systems.
