Abstract Metals are prone to corrosion, so the development of efficient intelligent protective coatings has become a major demand. In recent years, researchers have made significant progress in anti‐corrosion field. Intelligent can precisely release required healing agents or change solid–liquid phase transition response external stimuli, such as pH, temperature, and redox, achieving anti‐corrosion. This review summarized classifications coatings, discussed triggering mechanisms explored corrosion inhibitors for aiming provide reference further development.

Numerous strategies have been developed for the corrosion protection of steel; however, most them a significant environmental impact and employ toxic compounds. Tannins are green promising solution sustainable strategies. In this context, work was focused on natural (condensed hydrolysable) tannin layers as possible strategy carbon steel. The tannins’ dissolution medium (ultrapure water or Phosphate-Buffered Saline), surface pre-treatment (acid pickling plasma), deposition technology (dipping spin coating) layer homogeneity adhesion has evaluated. effects these parameters coating formation, homogeneity, investigated by means visual inspections, swabbing, Fourier Transformed Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy equipped with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) tape tests. Preliminary electrochemical tests performed material (carbon steel acid pickled coated hydrolysable solved in to estimate protective ability highlight main criticisms be overcome.
