Abstract Mind wandering (MW) is commonly observable in daily life. Early studies established an association between motivation and MW at the trait level using a questionnaire survey. Considering that mechanism of state-level them known, this study was conducted to replicate trait-level determine its possible mechanisms. Two independent samples were analysed several questionnaires, which included MW. General one- multi-dimensional scales administered for both variables. Besides successful replication significant level, we found people with low levels executive function experience high rates spontaneous This finding indicates underlying failure hypothesis, postulates control during task-related objectives evokes Further, motivation–MW relationship exhibits different psychological basis state levels.

In their Letter to the Editor, Friedman and Banich (1) suggest we (2) “overstate” higher suitability of dependent variables (DVs) derived from surveys for individual difference analyses. We appreciate this opportunity a continued discussion regarding measurement self-regulation. However, critiques do not provide evidence against reliability survey DVs, which is central our conclusions. Instead, they levy criticisms addressed in another papers (3). For instance, authors argue that task DVs could value analyses via latent variables. Indeed, confirmed underlying are more reliable compared (2, 3 … [↵][1]1To whom correspondence may be addressed.
