Coastal sediments in the proximity of wastewater and emergency outfalls are often sinks pharmaceutical compounds other organic inorganic contaminants that likely to affect microbial community. The metabolites these diversity their metabolic processes, resulting undesirable effects on ecosystem functioning, thus necessitating need understand composition functions. In present investigation, we studied metagenomes 12 coastal surface through whole genome shot-gun sequencing. Taxonomic binning genes predicted about 86% as bacteria, 1% archaea, >0.001% viruses Eukaryota, 12% communities. dominant bacterial, archaeal, fungal genera were Woeseia, Nitrosopumilus, Rhizophagus, respectively. most prevalent viral families Myoviridae Siphoviridae, T4 virus was bacteriophage. unigenes further aligned 26 clusters orthologous (COGs) five carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZy) classes. Glycoside hydrolases (GH) glycoside transferase (GT) highest-recorded CAzymes. Kyoto Encyclopedia Genes Genomes (KEGG) level 3 functions subjugated by purine metabolism > ABC transporters oxidative phosphorylation two-component system pyrimidine pyruvate quorum sensing carbon fixation pathways ribosomes glyoxalate dicarboxylate metabolism. Sequences allying with plasmids, integrons, insertion sequences antibiotic-resistance also observed. Both taxonomies functional abundances exhibited variation relative abundances, limited spatial variability (ANOVA p 0.05; ANOSIM-0.05, 0.05). This study underlines communities marine Kuwait a baseline for future biomonitoring programs.

Abstract Marine sediments constitute the world’s most substantial long-term carbon repository. The microorganisms dwelling in these mediate transformation of fixed oceanic carbon, but their contribution to cycle is not fully understood. Previous culture-independent investigations into sedimentary have underscored significance carbohydrates cycle. In this study, we employ a metagenomic methodology investigate distribution and abundance carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) 37 marine sites. These exhibit varying oxygen availability were isolated diverse regions worldwide. Our comparative analysis based on metabolic potential for utilisation, derived from genes present both oxic anoxic environments. We found that extracellular CAZyme modules targeting degradation plant algal detritus, necromass, host glycans abundant across all samples. results indicates oxic/anoxic conditions only influence taxonomic composition microbial communities, also affect occurrence involved algae detritus. To gain insight sediment taxa, reconstructed metagenome assembled genomes (MAG) examined presence primary carbohydrate active enzyme (CAZyme) modules. findings reveal gene clusters discovered our metagenomes prevalent Bacteroidia, Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria classes. compared those MAGs organisms same classes soil, they similar its repertoire, soil MAG contained more content. Furthermore, data indicate samples, namely Alphaproteobacteria, Bacteroidia play pivotal role within initial few metres sediments.
