Toward a Standard Measure of Gun Ownership: A Methodological and Theoretical Quandary in Firearm Research

One
limitation
of
the
literature
on
gun
ownership
is
a
lack
consensus
regarding
how
to
operationalize
dependent
variable.
Consequently,
measures
vary
widely
across
studies,
and
findings
about
prevalence
predictors
are
inconsistent.
In
current
study,
we
endeavor
develop
an
empirically
supported,
standard
measure
ownership.
First,
utilizing
data
from
national
sample
U.S.
population,
analyze
relative
validity
household
versus
personal
critically
appraise
value
accounting
for
quantity
purpose
Second,
per
our
findings,
recommend
short
set
survey
questions
as

differentiate
non-owners,
owners,
owners;

account

firearms
owned;

categorize
owners
by
motivation
