How good a research scientist is ChatGPT? We systematically probed the capabilities of GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 across four central components scientific process: as Research Librarian, Ethicist, Data Generator, Novel Predictor, using psychological science testing field. In Study 1 (Research Librarian), unlike human researchers, hallucinated, authoritatively generating fictional references 36.0% 5.4% time, respectively, although exhibited an evolving capacity to acknowledge its fictions. 2 Ethicist), (though not GPT-3.5) proved capable detecting violations like p-hacking in protocols, correcting 88.6% blatantly presented issues, 72.6% subtly issues. 3 (Data Generator), both models consistently replicated patterns cultural bias previously discovered large language corpora, indicating that ChatGPT can simulate known results, antecedent usefulness for data generation skills hypothesis generation. Contrastingly, 4 (Novel Predictor), neither model was successful at predicting new results absent their training data, appeared leverage substantially information when more vs. less novel outcomes. Together, these suggest GPT flawed but rapidly improving librarian, decent ethicist already, simple domains with characteristics poor empirical aid future experimentation.

Abstract Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been circulating and adapting within the human population for >4 years. A large number of mutations have occurred in viral genome, resulting significant variants known as concern (VOCs) interest (VOIs). The spike (S) protein harbors many characteristic VOCs VOIs, efforts made to explore functional effects S protein, which can cause or contribute infection, transmission, immune evasion, pathogenicity, illness severity. However, knowledge understanding are dispersed throughout various publications, there is a lack well-structured database annotation that based on manual curation. AnnCovDB provides manually curated annotations SARS-CoV-2. Mutations carried by at least 8000 GISAID were chosen, then utilized query keywords search PubMed database. searched publications revealed 2093 entities 205 single 93 multiple curated. These organized into multilevel hierarchical categories user convenience. For example, one entity N501Y mutation was ‘Infectious cycle➔Attachment➔ACE2 binding affinity➔Increase’. be used specific browse through function entities. Large language models (LLMs) are capable of writing grammatical text that follows instructions, answers questions, and solves problems. As they have advanced, it has become difficult to distinguish their output from human-written text. While past research found some differences in features such as word choice punctuation developed classifiers detect LLM output, none studied the rhetorical styles LLMs. Using several variants Llama 3 GPT-4o, we construct two parallel corpora human- LLM-written texts common prompts. Douglas Biber’s set lexical, grammatical, features, identify systematic between LLMs humans different These persist when moving smaller larger ones for instruction-tuned than base models. This observation demonstrates despite advanced abilities, struggle match human stylistic variation. Attention more linguistic can hence patterns behavior not previously recognized.

Abstract The recent development and use of generative AI (GenAI) has signaled a significant shift in research activities such as brainstorming, proposal writing, dissemination, even reviewing. This raised questions about how to balance the seemingly productive uses GenAI with ethical concerns authorship copyright issues, biased training data, lack transparency, impact on user privacy. To address these concerns, many Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have released institutional guidance for researchers. better understand that is being provided we report findings from thematic analysis guidelines thirty HEIs United States are classified R1 or “very high activity.” We found researchers: (1) asks them refer external sources information funding agencies publishers keep updated resources education; (2) learn specific attributes shape predictive modeling, knowledge cutoff date, data provenance, model limitations, educate themselves authorship, attribution, privacy, intellectual property issues; (3) includes instructions acknowledge disclose GenAI, communicate effectively their use, alerts researchers long term implications over reliance legal consequences, risks institutions use. Overall, places onus compliance individual making accountable any lapses, thereby increasing responsibility.
