The Aral Sea is located in the heart of Asia, Central spanning western part Kazakhstan and northwestern Uzbekistan. It a transient lake that emerged its current location approximately 600–700 years ago. Until 1960s, surface level continued to rise due inflow from Amu Darya Syr rivers.
