In
this
introduction
to
the
special
issue
Contested
Categories
in
Context
of
International
Migration,
we
argue
for
importance
critically
engaging
with
state-created
categories
and
classification
systems.
We
advocate
doing
so
particularly
convoluted
context
international
migration,
where
states
use
manage
migrants'
entry,
reception,
residence,
making
categorisation
extremely
consequential
individual
migrants,
even
though
bureaucratic
documentation
everyday
understandings
often
differ
greatly
between
home
countries
receiving
states.
