Abstract Background In January 2017, the Norwegian government mandated establishment of an inpatient unit for “medication-free treatment” patients with severe mental illness at University Hospital North Norway in Tromsø. This study aims to explore employees’ experiences this unit. Method Focus group interviews were conducted October 2021 – February 2022. For analysis, participants divided into three groups; S (staff working medication-free unit), M (people involved management unit) and T (therapists elsewhere hospital). The analysis followed Systematic Text Condensation recorded, transcribed analysed using NVivo software. Results Health professionals described their treatment through five main concepts: 1) Employees’ motivation; 2) Frames; 3) Network; 4) Relations; 5) Patients’ motivation. Staff expressed strong motivation alternative “treatment as usual,” focusing more on recovery relationships than absence medication.
