Abstract Strong interest in digital transformation to increase business value calls for new and improved theorising of the process. Traditional perspectives fail address complex socio‐technological challenges entanglement actions at multiple levels that characterise This research adopts a flow‐oriented perspective extend process frontier transformation. entails analysing lines action intertwine form storylines Drawing on multilevel longitudinal qualitative study, offers three valuable contributions: First, paper advances discourse by introducing heretofore unrecognised phenomenon transitional moments . Second, novel taxonomy action, demonstrates evolving nature process, surpassing conventional rational‐system model interpretations. These two contributions broaden underscoring dynamic continuous transformation, emphasising its non‐linear progression, rejecting notion an idealised direct path predefined goal. additions lay foundations our third contribution, which is set proposed approaches future investigations into regardless focus, phenomena, or domain.

Design/methodology/approach A survey was used different facets of capabilities and their impact success organisations holding an external recognition from European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM). Partial Least Squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) combined with Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) were analyse data. Findings Internalising practices is decisive mediating effective achieve development. To high levels success, must internalisation, which are much more important than model recognition. Purpose Despite the considerable hype about how Big Data Analytics (BDA) can transform businesses and advance their capabilities, recognising its strategic value through successful adoption is yet to be appreciated. The purpose of this paper focus on process-level value-chain realisation BDA between SMEs large organisations. Design/methodology/approach Resource-based theory offered lens for developing a conceptual chain model. A combined two-staged regression-artificial neural network approach has been utilised 369 small, medium (SMEs) organisations verify critical drivers organisational BDA. Findings findings revealed that success driven predominantly by product—and service-process-level value, with distinctive discrepancies dependent organisation’s size. Large primarily embrace external dimensions, while encompass internal cues. As such, will advised acknowledge dynamics precise size develop right strategies adopt successfully. Research limitations/implications study advances understanding role in influencing successfully adopted Thus, appreciating unique attributes, including size, need carefully examined. By investigating these elements, research shed new light such innovative capabilities competencies must crafted help create sustainable competitive advantage. Practical implications For an positioning, acknowledging implementing adopting larger businesses, resources innovation often widely available compared SMEs. they manage costs associated risks resourcefully. considering identified value-chain-related factors, should better positioned assess being prepared Originality/value offers business community empirical-based insights into needed big data organisation from perspective.
