Extreme heat is a growing concern for local governments, whose regulatory control of land development impacts the urban island effect. To better understand how governments are responding, this study reviewed mitigation plans and policies from municipalities regional districts in historically temperate south coast mainland British Columbia by asking Metro Vancouver Fraser Valley jurisdictions planning extreme heat? 243 documents across 29 (27 two districts) were using plan evaluation framework keyword searches. Our results showed that heat-mitigating interventions not uniformly or explicitly included within governments. Showing lack consideration as hazard. Urban greening site-scale most common jurisdictions. We argue effective governance requires coordination alignment with higher levels government departments

Abstract Tens of millions households across Europe struggle to afford adequate electricity and heating services reliable transportation, while recent high fuel prices could lead an increase in excess winter deaths. Abstract Climate mitigation and climate adaptation are crucial tasks for urban areas can involve synergies as well trade-offs. However, few studies have examined how efforts relate to each other in a large number of differently sized cities, therefore we know little about whether forerunners also leading or if cities tend focus on just one policy field. Abstract Whether disasters influence adaptation actions in cities is contested. Yet, the extant knowledge base primarily consists of single or small-N case studies, so there no global overview evidence on disaster impacts and adaptation. Here, we use regression analysis to explore effects frequency severity four action types 549 cities. In countries with greater adaptive capacity, economic losses increase city-level targeting recently experienced event types, as well strengthen general preparedness. An reduces hazard other than those that occurred, while human have few effects. Comparisons between across levels capacity indicate a wealth effect. More affluent incur damages from disasters, but also higher governance creating both incentives opportunities for measures.
