It was previously shown that words representing living things are better remembered than those nonliving things. Here we address the influence of animacy on novel word memory formation in adults, dissecting its effect semantic and orthographic learning. Participants received training a set new picture-name-description mappings corresponding to animate or inanimate items, simulating learning first language. The integration indexed judgment task, performed at 30 min 48 h after Results show forms meanings items recalled ones. In addition, processed faster task learning, while speed advantage is not evident long-term. Thus, pervasive enhancer during acquisition but effects lexical processing short-lived.

The animacy effect—the finding that animates are better remembered than inanimates—is proving to be a robust empirical phenomenon. Considering the adaptiveness of animate advantage, one might expect it remain after long retention intervals and also present irrespectively an intention learn. study explores these two aspects. Different groups participants learned (intentional learning) or rated pleasantness (incidental inanimate words; memory was tested immediately 48 h delay. A significant effect obtained both in learning conditions. Two interactions revealed larger effect, as well interval, when incidental. Our findings reinforce robustness provide some insight into possible proximate mechanisms effect.

Abstract What makes some words more memorable than others? Words can vary in many dimensions, and a variety of lexical, semantic, affective properties have previously been associated with variability recall performance. Free data were used from 147 participants across 20 experimental sessions the Penn Electrophysiology Encoding Retrieval Study (PEERS) set, 1,638 words. Here, I consider how well different word properties—across dimensions—relate to free recall. Semantic particularly animacy (better memory for living), usefulness (with respect survival; better useful), size larger) demonstrated strongest relationships probability. These key results then examined replicated Lau, Goh, Yap ( Quarterly Journal Experimental Psychology, 71 , 2207–2222, 2018), which had 532 116 participants. This comprehensive investigation memorability demonstrates that semantic function-related psycholinguistic play an important role verbal processes.

Animates are remembered better than inanimates because the former ultimately more important for fitness latter. What, however, proximate mechanisms underpinning this effect? We focused on imagery processes as one explanation. tested whether animacy effects related to vividness of mental images (Study 1), or dynamic/motoric nature corresponding animate words 2). The findings showed that: (1) not estimated be vivid inanimates; (2) potentially dynamic representations animates does seem a factor making memorable inanimates. compared 3) condition in which participants had categorise and inanimate with they form from them. effect was significant after categorising but forming imagery.
