Normalizing mental health disorders in media communication can have a positive impact on the public by improving awareness. However, normalizing issues like anxiety could lead people to categorize normal as disorder. In Study One, viewing social posts that normalized resulted greater likelihood of self-diagnosis disorder compared did not normalize it. This effect was through identification with and liking person featured post. Two, those results were replicated. Additionally, we expected, but find, had an perceived stigma disorders. Thus, at least this case, normalization influenced primarily increasing another anxiety, rather than decreasing stigma. Efforts maximize impacts should examine unintended, potentially negative, consequences.
