Yet, prior work suggests that such norm-violating does not undermine support for democracy as a system of government. Abstract Recent studies suggest that citizens are unlikely to trade off free elections for other desirable outcomes, such as economic growth. However, while central democracies, today democracy is not often undermined by abolishing elections. Our study shifts the focus citizens' willingness more granular democratic principles frequently eroded in backsliding processes – judicial independence, media freedom or horizontal accountability higher incomes. Through a seven‐country conjoint experiment, we analyse how prioritize among these and estimate their ‘willingness pay’ additional income needed persuade give up.
