Purpose The purpose of this study was to reveal the interrelationships between residents’ perceived trust, social and personal benefits event support intention for Tokyo Olympic Paralympic Games. were investigated over time. Design/methodology/approach Data collected twice (Time 1: 7–9 September 2021 Time 2: 2022) using a panel design. Stratified online sampling employed based on resident status, age viewership ( n = 714). Structural equation modelling analyse data. Findings Trust strongly affected at 1 2. However, 2 did not significantly influence reciprocal effects observed be weakly related or related. Practical implications Bidding procedures often require public backing. Actors must explain how residents will generally which might derive from megasport event. Briefings would also boost openness. Messages that locals can apply their own lives are more important than explaining society change. Originality/value This contributed literature by applying concepts trust buy-in exchange theory context mega-sporting events. findings highlighted success such events hinged buy-in. Contrary previous studies, research clarified while may have distrusted certain entities, they still supported event, indicating operated independently.

Sports events hold significant importance for host territories, influencing their economic, social, and environmental dynamics. These generate diverse impacts that shape residents’ perceptions subsequent support, which are crucial ensuring long-term success. However, the study of motorsports, particularly rally at national championship level, remains underexplored, despite capacity to attract tourism foster regional development. This adopts a quantitative approach, employing survey 753 responses collected during urban track 2024 Sierra Morena Rally in Córdoba, Spain. Using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) non-hierarchical Cluster Analysis, residents were segmented based on impacts—touristic, environmental, urban—and support event. Motorsports tourism has a significant impact on host communities, especially when they are small communities. This research aims to segment the resident population of very rural municipality, Obejo, before celebration Sierra Morena Rally in province Cordoba, Spain.
