Studies suggest that parents' emotional availability (EA) is associated with children's wellbeing, including in the case of children autism. Our study extended prior research by examining role representations fostering parental EA and focusing on fathers autism severe behavior problems. We expected positive would be higher compared mothers' fathers' EA. Participants were 79 mothers 69 (child age range = 61-173 months, 21.95% girls). Representation assessments included Reaction to Diagnosis Questionnaire, tapping resolution respect child's diagnosis, coherence comments Five Minute Speech Samples about child. Controlling for symptoms adaptive functioning, diagnosis (but not coherence) their EA, resolution) Mothers expressed more than fathers, scores significantly correlated. results highlight importance considering both when studying working families
