Traditions around second homes are well established in northern Europe, although there variations between and within countries terms of development patterns the use this type housing. Focusing on coastal communities Northern Norway Faroes, study explored how year-round residents homers sharing same location coalesce form "open communities" that can tackle challenges such as depopulation remoteness. Vapaa-ajan asuminen on merkittävä osa suomalaisten vapaa-ajan viettoa ja matkailua. Suomessa yli puoli miljoonaa asuntoa arvioitu, että jopa 2,4 suomalaista viettää aikaa asunnoilla vuosittain. Teemme tässä artikkelissa katsauksen asumisen tutkimukseen Suomessa. Tämä katsaus perustuu kirjallisuuslähteiden ohella omakohtaiseen kokemukseemme tutkimuksen alalta, jota kertynyt viimeisten kahdenkymmenen vuoden aikana lukuisista erilaisista tutkimushankkeista, kotimaisista kansainvälisistä tapahtumista, tutkijavaihdoista, mediahaastatteluista sekä osallistumisesta alueelliseen valtakunnalliseen kehittämistoimintaan päätöksentekoa tukevaan tutkimukseen. Lyhyen historian jälkeen esittelemme tehtyä tutkimusta keskeisiä tutkijoita tutkimusryhmiä. Tämän arvioimme viime vuosien globaalien kriisien vaikutuksia Johtopäätösluvussa pohdimme matkailututkimuksen Matkailututkimus-lehden merkitystä keskustelukenttänä edistäjänä nostamme esiin havaintojamme tutkimusaukoista -tarpeista.
