Role identity theory describes the purpose and meaning in life that comes, part, from occupying social roles. While robustly linked to health well-being, this may become, however, when an individual is unable fulfil perceived requirements of especially salient role way they believe should. Amid high rates mental illness among public safety personnel, we interviewed a purposely selected sample 21 paramedics single service Ontario, Canada explore incongruence between espoused able-to-enact paramedic identity. Situated interpretivist epistemology, using successive rounds thematic analysis, developed framework for dissonance wherein chronic, identity-relevant disruptive events cause emotional psychological distress. some participants were able recalibrate their sense self understanding role, others, was irreconcilable, contributing disability lost time work. In addition novel perspective on our work also offers modest contribution context as example consider disruption through chronic workplace stress.

Crossing the ‘flaky bridge’ ‐ the initial transitory experiences of qualifying as a paramedic: a mixed-methods study DOI

Introduction: Newly qualified paramedics (NQPs) may experience emotional turbulence as they transition to professional practice. This negatively affect confidence and have an adverse effect on attrition. study highlights the initial transitory experiences of NQPs. Methods: The utilised a mixed-methods convergent design. Qualitative quantitative data were collected simultaneously triangulated more fully interpret participants’ experiences. A convenience sample 18 NQPs from one ambulance trust was used. Connor-Davidson Resilience 25-point Scale questionnaire (CD-RISC25) administered analysed using descriptive statistics. Semi-structured interviews conducted Charmaz’s constructivist grounded theory approach. Data September December 2018. Results: There range resilience scores, with mean 74.7/100 (standard deviation 9.6). Since the NOCP was published 2011, paramedic practice, healthcare, and society have changed dramatically. To inform revision, we sought to identify emerging concepts literature that would development of competencies paramedics. We conducted a restricted review content analysis all grey pertaining or informing Canadian paramedicine from 2011 2022. Three authors performed title, abstract, full-text label informed by existing findings.
