Agriculture in the Indian Sundarbans deltaic region primarily depends on a rice-based monocropping system during rainy season, with subsequent season often remaining fallow. To mitigate this issue, series of experiments using zero tillage and straw mulching (ZTSM) potato cultivation were conducted over eight consecutive years (2017–2024) across various islands Delta, West Bengal, aimed to intensify cropping ensure betterment land use pattern climate-smart agricultural practices. In initial two years, concentrated assessing different cultivars nutrient dosages under paddy conditions. During focus shifted field demonstrations diverse climatic The research included application macronutrients growth regulators, combination depths mulching. final study, intervention was dedicated solely horizontal expansion cultivated land. These initiatives enhance productivity sustainable polders, promoting climate-resilient farming From sets experiments, we standardized management strategies selection appropriate vis-à-vis depth and, finally, overall best agronomic practices for region. adoption ZTSM demonstrated considerable success, as evidenced by remarkable increase number farmers employing practice. practicing surged from 23 year 1100, covering an area more than 15 ha, highlighting effectiveness technology. analysis estimated also showed that 90% is likely be achieved within decade. This potential underscores benefits improving soil health, conserving water, reducing labour costs. As recognize advantages mulching, approach poised play pivotal role agriculture, enhancing while environmental stewardship.
