Abstract Although research on workaholic leaders is accumulating, there no consensus in the literature regarding its effectiveness and our understanding of how it affects employee innovative behavior remains limited. Therefore, based cognitive appraisal theory stress, we investigate when either facilitate or hinder teachers' behavior. A multi-wave survey with 566 leader-teacher dyads from primary junior schools China found that initially raise awareness performance stress among teachers. Overall, have a dual impact innovation: they promote through challenging but inhibit hindrance appraisal. Role breadth self-efficacy significantly moderates this influence mechanism. For teachers high role self-efficacy, positively affect their mainly stress; for those low negatively primarily stress.
