As a special type of clay, expansive clay is widely distributed in China. Its characteristics swelling and softening when meeting water shrinking cracking losing bring many hidden dangers to engineering construction. Expansive known as “engineering cancer”, in-depth research on the unloading mechanical response constitutive relationships prerequisite for conducting geotechnical design safety analysis expansive-soil areas. In order obtain expression tangent modulus typical Hefei area was taken object, triaxial stress path tests were conducted. The stress–strain properties, microstructures, macro failure modes, strength indexes analyzed under paths. Through an applicability several classical soil criteria, model constructed based Mohr–Coulomb (hereinafter referred “M-C”) criterion, Drucker–Prager “D-P”) extended Spatial Mobilized Plane “SMP”) criterion theoretical frameworks. following results obtained: (1) curves three paths hyperbolic. showed strain-hardening belonged work-hardening soil. (2) Under paths, particles involved process release, samples obvious stretching, curling, slipping phenomena their sheet elements. (3) both significantly weakened reduced. lateral cohesive force (c) reduced by 32.7% internal friction angle (φ) increased 19% compared with those conventional loading, while axial path, c 63.5% φ 28.7%. (4) For Hefei, compression “CTC”) test, “RTC”) extension “RTE”) test suitable characterization deformation prediction using M-C D-P SMP respectively. (5) derived unified formula could accurately predict clay. These will provide important reference future construction expansive-clay
