Abstract The development of high-power diode lasers enabled new solid-state laser concepts such as thin-disk, fiber, and Innoslab based on trivalent ytterbium the laser-active ion, which resulted in a tremendous increase efficiency beam quality cw compared to previously used lamp-pumped rod or slab realization ultrafast with several 100 W even kilowatts average power. In addition their beneficial thermo-optical properties, these architectures offer characteristic benefits making them especially suitable obtain dedicated properties. This review article comprises milestone developments, challenges, benefits, summarizes state art focus lasers.

Abstract Optical fiber‐based lasers and amplifiers are ubiquitous tools across many practical applications including communications, metrology, sensing, manufacturing, machining, directed energy. Even for the most efficient cases where only a few percent of optical power is converted into heat, this heat generation can have wide‐ranging detrimental effects on overall system performance. In homage to 2022 International Year Glass , paper provides new look enabling roles that glass play in fully passive thermal management active fiber amplifiers. Partially didactic, complemented with insights novel approaches results, specific topics include means by which compositions reduce amount generated an dopant how glass’ response generation, example, thermo‐optic expansion coefficients, be minimized or otherwise used largely mitigate parasitic effects.
