Summary The mangrove Avicennia marina adjusts internal salt concentrations by foliar secretion. Deliquescence of accumulated causes leaf wetting that may provide a water source for salt‐secreting plants in arid coastal wetlands where high nocturnal humidity can usually support deliquescence whereas rainfall events are rare. We tested the hypotheses on surfaces drive top‐down rehydration, and such absorption moisture from unsaturated atmospheres makes functional contribution to dry season shoot balances. Sap flow relations were monitored assess uptake atmospheric branches during under natural manipulated microclimatic conditions. Reverse sap rates increased with increasing relative 70% 89%, consistent function harvesting atmospheres. Top‐down rehydration elevated branch potentials above those possible root uptake, subsidising transpiration reducing vulnerability hydraulic failure subsequent photoperiod. Absorption harvested through enhances balances growing hypersaline climatic these frequent, low intensity contributes prevention carbon starvation drought.

Abstract Climate and local water availability are major evolutionary drivers of adaptive variation plasticity in the hydraulic architecture Tropical Montane Cloud Forest (TMCF) tree species. Between‐year xylem vessel variability is key to understanding adaptation potential wood anatomy trees drought. How anatomical features have been influenced by typical TMCF climate how species persist these environments remain open questions, particularly context predicted extreme events future. Here, we evaluated effects changes temperature, precipitation evapotranspiration during drought on ring‐width traits (hydraulic diameter, density, grouping index vulnerability index) for two relict endemic threatened oak ( Quercus delgadoana Q . meavei ) from a Mexican TMCF. The study differed their functional ecological traits, differences related specific environmental requirements. However, indices (RWIs) calculated indicate that both high resistance recovery, thus resilience events. Ring‐width show between‐year associated with efficiency species, which crucial they avoid drought‐induced embolism cavitation conduits. These results provide evidence existence systems determine response climatic Further research assessing different variables identifying underlie adaptations, along mechanisms allowing persistence environments, essential gain insight into responses future Read free Plain Language Summary this article Journal blog.
