Abstract Song competitions involving passerines, such as the Green-winged Saltator (Saltator similis), are legally permitted in Brazil and attract widespread participation. This study aimed to assess adrenal response male S. similis by comparing glucocorticoid metabolite (GCM) levels uro-faecal extract samples collected during three with those from a rest day (3 days before competition, D-3), competition (D-1), of (D0) after (D1). Simultaneously, we examined potential variation GCM among other males not engaged song but subjected ex situ conditions much like participating males. were measured using direct enzyme immunoassay (EIA, CJM006), which was physiologically (ACTH challenge) analytically validated (parallelism, accuracy precision tests) for species under study. The results indicated that average concentration lower group (33.43 ± 22.09 ng/g) compared control (70.09 29.45 ng/g; P = 0.01). However, concentrations spiked significantly on (D0: 38.29 26.12 (D-3: 28.64 17.86 0.02), suggesting acute stress response. Given elevated observed competitions, further research is necessary confirm welfare these birds explore long-term effects stressors.

The brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli) is a flightless, nocturnal bird native to New Zealand and classified as “At Risk” due predation from domestic dogs ferrets. In the U.S., have been managed under AZA Animal Population Management Studbook Program since 2006, with Smithsonian National Zoological Park (NZP) Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) maintaining species 1968. However, because they are nocturnal, not good exhibit animals often difficult for zoo visitors observe during day. To address this, NZP launched “Meet-A-Kiwi” ambassador program in 1989 engage public raise awareness. ran successfully 28 years until 2017, when renovations closed Bird House at Washington, DC, birds were moved Front Royal, VA campus. Over time, concerns about suitability of arose do imprint on people. This study assessed effects outreach events, housing, relocation adrenal activity five (four males, one female) by measuring fecal glucocorticoid metabolite (fGCM) concentrations, physiological stress indicator, March October 2016. Two males participated (ambassadors), while two female did (controls). results showed no significant differences fGCM concentrations between control birds, suggesting that cause undue stress. individual factors (age, sex, hatching type, display status) associated highlighting need personalized management. Further longitudinal studies needed explore responses captive conditions.

Wild animals, particularly those affected by urban expansion, frequently face challenges such as vehicle collisions, and encounters with domestic dogs. Rehabilitation in care facilities, usually conducted ex-situ conditions, poses considerable challenges. In rescue centers, these animals are exposed to a new environment characterized human noise the presence of multiple species confined space. This can potentially trigger stress responses immunosuppression, further compromising their health. study aimed assess endocrine immunological parameters owls (Megascops choliba) under for continuous 49-day period. Twelve adult were audio recordings from center between days 15 35. Fecal samples collected each owl every seven days, well blood eight birds. analyzed glucocorticoid metabolites (GCM), while used measure plasma corticosterone levels, bacterial killing ability (BKA), heterophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (H/L). Our findings revealed that GCM concentration increased during exposure regardless sex, levels remained unchanged. BKA decreased compared before treatment, but H/L did not differ time points. These results show induces alterations allostatic mediators owls, requiring research address other physiological changes individuals may affect recovery maintenance care.
