Abstract A human’s ability to adapt and learn relies on reflecting past performance. Such reflections form latent factors called internal states that induce variability of movement behavior improve Internal are critical for survival, yet their temporal dynamics neural substrates less understood. A recently published article by van Heijst et al. attempted to reconcile two research approaches in the science of emotion—basic emotion theory and constructed emotion—by suggesting that former explains emotions as bioregulatory states body whereas latter feelings arise from those state changes. This bifurcation into objective physical subjective involves three misleading simplifications fundamentally misrepresent prevent progress emotion. In this we identify these resulting factual errors, empirical oversights, evolutionary oversimplifications. We then discuss why such errors will continue until scientists realize theories are intrinsically irreconcilable. They rest on incommensurate assumptions require different methods evaluation. Perception of sensory stimuli can be modulated by changes in internal state to drive contextually appropriate behavior. For example, dehydration is a threat terrestrial animals, especially Drosophila melanogaster due their large surface area volume ratio, particularly under the energy demands flight. While hydrated D. avoid water cues, while walking, leads water-seeking We show that tethered flight, flies ignore stimulus, whereas dehydrated track plume. Antennal occlusions eliminate odor and plume tracking, inactivation moist sensing neurons antennae disrupts tracking only upon starvation dehydration. Elimination olfactory coreceptor eradicates leaving behavior intact flies. Our results suggest similar hygrosensory receptors may used for walking in-flight hygrotaxis, temporal dynamics modulating perception vary with behavioral state.

Animals chain movements into long-lived motor strategies, exhibiting variability across scales that reflects the interplay between internal states and environmental cues. To reveal structure in such variability, we build Markov models of movement sequences bridge timescales enable a quantitative comparison behavioral phenotypes among individuals. Applied to larval zebrafish responding diverse sensory cues, uncover hierarchy dominated by changes orientation distinguishing cruising versus wandering strategies. Environmental cues induce preferences along these modes at population level: while fish cruise light, they wander response aversive stimuli, or search for appetitive prey. As our method encodes dynamics each individual transitions coarse-grained use it hierarchical phenotypic exploration–exploitation trade-offs. Across wide range major source variation is driven prior and/or immediate exposure prey induces exploitation phenotypes. Physiological signals serve as indispensable clues for understanding various physiological states of human bodies. Most existing works have focused on a single type range application scenarios. However, the body is holistic biological system, inherent interconnection among data should not be neglected. In particular, given brain's role control center vital activities, electroencephalogram (EEG) exhibits significant correlations with other signals. Therefore, correlation between EEG and holds potential to improve performance in Nevertheless, achieving this goal still constrained by several challenges: scarcity simultaneously collected data, differences signals, tasks.
