Taxonomy has long struggled with analysing vast amounts of phenotypic data due to computational and accessibility challenges. Ontology-based technologies provide a framework for modelling semantic phenotypes that are understandable by computers compliant FAIR principles. In this paper, we explore the use Phenoscript, an emerging language designed creating phenotypes, produce computable species descriptions. Our case study centers on application approach dung beetles (Coleoptera, Scarabaeinae). We illustrate effectiveness Phenoscript phenotypes. also demonstrate ability Phenospy python package automatically translate descriptions into natural (NL), which eliminates need writing traditional NL introduce pipeline streamlines generation their conversion NL. To power approach, apply simple queries generated This paper addresses current challenges in crafting outlines path towards future improvements. Furthermore, discuss promising integration nanopublications, as methods sharing scientific information. Overall, our highlights pivotal role ontology-based modernising taxonomy aligning it evolving landscape big analysis

The dung beetle genus Scarabaeus (Coleoptera, Scarabaeinae, Scarabaeini), predominantly found in the arid regions of Old World, includes three endemic species inhabiting dry ecosystems western and southern Madagascar. These are presumed to form a monophyletic clade nested within African . Semantic modelling phenotypes using ontologies represents transformative approach description biology, making phenotypic data FAIR computable. recently developed Phenoscript language enables creation semantic, computable descriptions syntax akin human natural (NL). However, has not yet been tested as tool for describing new taxa. In this study, we test utility by species, (sensu lato) sakalava sp. nov. from initial is composed directly Phenoscript, replacing traditional format. This then translated into human-readable Phenospy publication purposes. Additionally, converted an RDF graph, it understandable computers semantic technologies. central Madagascar closely related S. viettei (Paulian, 1953) north-western We provide updated identification key distribution map all Malagasy discuss their systematic placement.
