Microorganisms are the biotic foundation for nutrient cycling across ecosystems, and their assembly is often based on availability of environment. Though previous research has explored seasonal lake turnover geochemical within Salton Sea, California's largest lake, microbial community this declining ecosystem been largely overlooked. We collected seawater from a single location Sea at 0 m, 3 4 5 7 9 10 10.5 m depths in August 2021, December April 2022. observed that water column microbiome significantly varied by season (R2 = 0.59, P 0.003). Temperature 0.27, 0.004), dissolved organic matter 0.13, oxygen 0.089, 0.004) were significant drivers changes composition. In addition, several halophilic mixotrophs other extremotolerant bacteria consistently identified samples time points, though relative abundances fluctuated season. found while sulfur genes present all metagenomes, coverages pathway throughout column. Sulfur oxidation incomplete pathways conserved seasons. Our work demonstrates Seawater capacity to metabolize species utilize multiple trophic strategies, such as alternating between chemorganotrophy chemolithoautrophy, survive harsh, fluctuating Together, these results suggest integral ever-changing thus contributes dynamics Sea. Further required understand how environmental implicated relationship Sea's cycle, dust proliferation, respiratory distress experienced local population.

<p>Owing to the high productivity of cold seep ecosystems, sediments are often enriched in organic compounds, such as biomacromolecules, which may serve resources for local microbial communities. In this study, we investigated sedimental microbiome Haima with 225 nonredundant metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs). Among these, 68 MAGs affiliated 12 phyla were prevalent active or extinct habitats. They primarily harbored key genes linked carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles. addition, most them potentially engaged hydrocarbon biomacromolecule metabolisms, suggesting an essential role compounds geochemical cycling seeps. Notably, a proteobacterial lineage habitats, coinciding presence benthic fauna, was found carrying chitin nitrogen indicating its significance recycling. Further enzymatic analysis showed that chitinase remained structurally stable but displayed significant enhancement activity 133.95 ± 0.89 μmol L-1 h-1 under conditions 15 MPa 4°C, adaptation deep-sea environment. Collectively, our work shed light on contribution organotrophs cycling, proposing long-term carbon storage seeps.</p>

Permafrost soils are critical reservoirs for mercury (Hg), with the thawing process leading to release of this element into environment, posing significant environmental risks. Of particular concern is methylated form mercury, monomethylmercury (MMHg), known its adverse effects on Human health. Microbial communities play a pivotal role in formation MMHg by facilitating Hg methylation and demethylation MMHg, slowing crossing toxic threshold concentration environment. However, specific microbes involved still need be understood. This study aimed identify microbial drivers behind changes speciation (MMHg Hg) permafrost thaw lakes assess significance biotic component biogeochemistry. Sediment samples from two thermokarst Canadian sub-Arctic were collected during winter summer 2022. Gene-centric metagenomics using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was employed key genes (hgcA hgcB) (merA merB), supported qPCR analyses. A seasonal decline diversity, methylation, hgcA gene coverage observed summer, mirroring patterns rates. Notably, sequences significantly more abundant than merAB sequences, contrasting trends. These results indicate shift community, transitioning dominance predominance summer. Environmental these dynamics integrated conceptual model. provide new insights processes influencing cycle Arctic undergoing degradation.
