Planctopirus limnophila belongs to the bacterial phylum Planctomycetes, a relatively understudied lineage with remarkable cell biology features. Here, we report genome-wide analysis of essential gene content in P. limnophila. We show that certain genes involved peptidoglycan synthesis or division, which are most other studied bacteria, not for growth under laboratory conditions this species. identify likely lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis, consistent view Planctomycetes as diderm and highlight unknown functions. Furthermore, explore potential stages evolution repertoire related phyla Verrucomicrobia Chlamydiae. Our results provide insights into divergent molecular cellular Planctomycetes.

Pyrophosphatases (PPases) are enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of pyrophosphate (PPi), a byproduct synthesis and degradation diverse biomolecules. The accumulation PPi in cell can result death. Although substrate is same, there variations catalysis features these enzymes. Two enzyme forms have been identified bacteria: cytoplasmic or soluble pyrophosphatases membrane-bound pyrophosphatases, which play major roles bioenergetics. In eukaryotic cells, predominant form PPases (c-PPases), while membrane (m-PPases) found only protists plants. study bacterial has slowed recent years. Second, scientific community should continue studying because they many biotechnological applications. Additionally, we evidence m-PPases present fungi; date, no characterized. ABSTRACT The peptidoglycan (PG, or murein) is a mesh-like structure, which made of glycan polymers connected by short peptides and surrounds the cell membrane nearly all bacterial species. In contrast, there no PG counterpart that would be universally found in Archaea but rather various are specific to some lineages. Abstract Plasmids, despite their critical role in antibiotic resistance and modern biotechnology, are understood only a few bacterial groups terms of natural ecological dynamics. The phylum Planctomycetes, known for its unique molecular cellular biology, has largely unexplored plasmidome. This study offers thorough exploration the diversity plasmids within which could serve as foundation developing various genetic research tools this phylum. Planctomycetes encode broad range biological functions appear to have coevolved significantly with host chromosomes, sharing many homologues. Recent transfer events insertion sequences between cohabiting chromosomes were also observed. Interestingly, 64% plasmid genes distantly related either chromosomally encoded or homologues from other groups. planctomycetal plasmidome is composed 36% exclusive proteins.
