Abstract Hybridization—the interbreeding of different species—plays an integral role in the evolution numerous bird species. However, it remains unclear how widespread this phenomenon is within and across groups. Estimating incidence hybridization lineages can inform comparative analyses to uncover evolutionary ecological forces that promote or prevent formation hybrids. Estimates on a species level have varied from about 10% almost 20% hybridizing The variation among latest estimates largely depends choice global checklists with differing decisions taxonomic status certain (sub)species. hybrid records these generally been taken at face value. Detailed assessments revealed some cases are unreliable incorrect. Removing faulty discovery novel hybrids will result fluctuating percentage best be captured living document (e.g., regularly updated website checklist). individual more challenging. A first attempt, using citizen science data eBird project, reported 0.064% individuals United States. This probably underestimate due underreporting by birdwatchers finetuned considering other confounding factors, such as spatial temporal dynamics. Future efforts estimating avian need rely combination sources techniques, genetics, museum specimens, science.

Abstract Contact zones between divergent forms within a species provide insight into the role of gene flow in adaptation and speciation. Previous work has focused on contact involving only two forms, but nature, many more than populations may overlap simultaneously experience flow. Patterns introgression wild are, therefore, likely much complicated is often assumed. We begin to address this gap current knowledge by investigating patterns divergence across complex natural zone. use phenotypic genomic data confirm existence three‐way zone among freshwater resident, saltwater resident migratory three‐spined stickleback ( Gasterosteus aculeatus ) island North Uist, Scottish Western Isles. find evidence for hybridization, mostly forms. Despite analyses reveal pairwise islands all that are maintained Genomic cline also selection and/or hybrid incompatibilities regions. Divergent regions occur multiple chromosomes involve known adaptive loci several chromosomal inversions. identify distinct immune expression profiles no transgressive hybrids. Our results suggest reproductive isolation zone, despite some reduced recombination inversions play an important maintaining isolation.

Some oscine passerines incorporate heterospecific sounds into their repertoires, including vocalizations of other bird species, fauna, and even anthropogenic sounds, through vocal mimicry. However, few studies have investigated whether mimics learn from model species or conspecific tutors. Here, we investigate mimicry acquisition using innovation in Cuculidae calls imitated by the Chinese blackbird (Turdus mandarinus). If arises spreads among several neighbors is not produced must be acquired partially conspecifics. We found that: (1) blackbirds were reasonably accurate, but with some differences between mimetic real acoustic structures. (2) identified four unique units (mimicry copy errors), these only occurred at certain sites shared neighbors. In aggregate, frequency parameters (the first principal component) higher than usual (p < 0.001). Our findings provide further evidence that can learnt conspecifics based on cases units. study approach a reference theoretical basis for future understanding social learning development
