Abstract Serotonergic psychedelics induce altered states of consciousness and have shown potential for treating a variety neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression addiction. Yet their modes action are not fully understood. Here, we provide novel, synergistic understanding arising from systematic reviews meta-analyses three hierarchical levels analysis: 1) subjective experience (phenomenology), 2) neuroimaging 3) molecular pharmacology. Phenomenologically, medium high doses LSD yield significantly higher ratings visionary restructuralisation than psilocybin on the 5-dimensional Altered States Consciousness Scale. Our results reveal that, in general, strengthen between-network functional connectivity (FC) while diminishing within-network FC. Pharmacologically, induces more inositol phosphate formation at 5-HT 2A receptor DMT psilocin, yet there no significant between-drug differences selectivity , 2C or D 2 receptors, relative to 1A receptor. link DMT, LSD, specific neural fingerprints each level analysis. The show highly non-linear relationship between these fingerprints. Overall, our analysis highlighted heterogeneity risk bias literature. This suggests an urgent need standardising experimental procedures techniques, as well research emergence different psychedelic effects.
