The pathways to economic development are changing. Environmental sustainability is no longer a choice but necessity maintain competitive edge in the global economy. Just like nature, where survival hinges on adaptation, this Element shows how nations adjust -and take advantage of- new dynamics of structural transformation induced by climate change. First, analysing uneven industrial geography decarbonisation, inadequate state financing and rise green protectionism, it demonstrates that low-carbon economy stands increase disparities between nations, unless action taken. We address the social sustainability dimension of labour-intensive industrialization (LII) and manufacturing activities apply it to analysis Mauritius, a regional forerunner in textile garment production. While country’s socioeconomic development trajectory has caused some scholars label as an African success story, we do not evaluate its against traditional economic theory on achieving sustained growth. Instead, analyze LII component based from early 1970s onwards criteria sustainability. investigate specific interplay between policy establishment transformation sector.
