The secondary lateral meristem—the vascular cambium (hereafter cambium)—is the largest meristem of plant kingdom. It is almost always composed two types stem cells: (1) axial (fusiform) initials, most common and better known studied, (2) ray initials that give rise to rays rays), i.e., radial component xylem phloem, which are less much in many studies ignored. There great flexibility switching from vice versa. Ray commonly compose ca. 10–40% mature tree trunks, but nothing or very little typical young model plants used for molecular cambial studies, such as Arabidopsis thaliana internodes Populus spp. cuttings.
