Cataract surgery is a widely performed and highly effective procedure that significantly improves vision in elderly patients. This narrative review examines the impact of cataract on mental health outcomes elderly, focusing conditions such as depression, anxiety, cognitive decline. The highlights prevalence cataracts older adults importance this demographic, emphasizing interconnectedness visual health. Improved following has been associated with enhanced quality life, increased independence, better psychological well-being. Mechanisms linking improvement to benefits include biological pathways, psychosocial factors, overall improvements. However, socioeconomic access healthcare, patient education play crucial roles achieving positive outcomes. also compares other interventions, providing cost-benefit analysis discussing long-term sustainability benefits. Practice recommendations pre-surgical screening, integrative care approaches, guidelines for postoperative concludes suggestions future research further explore relationship between aiming enhance clinical practice public strategies.

Cataracts are associated with a decline in both cognitive and visual functions. This study examines postoperative changes functions patients age-related cataracts, focusing on the differential effects of unilateral bilateral cataract surgeries these Additionally, evaluates function following surgery individuals mild impairment (MCI). A cohort (n = 35, 59 eyes) aged 60 years older (69.9 ± 7.0 years) cataracts who underwent or between May June 2024 was selected. Cognitive were evaluated preoperatively at 1 week, month, 3 months postoperatively. using Montreal Assessment (MoCA). Visual assessed binocular testing system based virtual reality (VR) technology, which low spatial frequency suppression, simultaneous vision, stereopsis, perceptual eye position under 3D viewing conditions without glasses. Based preoperative MoCA scores, classified into cognitively normal (MCI) groups. Patients demonstrated significant improvements postoperatively, compared to assessments (p < 0.05). Specifically, group MCI exhibited substantial time points outperformed throughout follow-up period In terms function, showed stereopsis measurements Both significantly improved after surgery. Bilateral is more effective increasing than plays critical role facilitating recovery

<p>Fear of falling is a significant problem among the elderly population, leading to decrease in quality life. Research on this phenomenon has been actively conducted abroad since 1990s, starting with works N. Lach, M. Lachman, and Tinetti. In Russia, there practically no research fear falling. <strong>Objective</strong>. This study dedicated systematizing summarizing existing data various health conditions. <strong>Methods</strong>. Theoretical analysis contemporary elderly. <strong>Results Conclusions</strong>. It was found that reliable correlation between sensory deficits falling, although reduced vision, hearing, proprioceptor sensitivity increase risk Fear can develop physically well-functioning individuals high levels anxiety, depression secondary The presence pronounced character accentuations contribute development even panic attacks. Parkinson`s disease, increases cognitively intact patients, associated catastrophizing. Alzheimer`s disease mild cognitive impairment, indicators are almost indistinguishable from those healthy individuals. Data across clinical groups heterogeneous, requires more thorough investigation. could be beneficial developing psychocorrection programs for patients reducing falling.</p>

Background Cataract surgery has been shown to reduce the risk of developing dementia in future; however, its impact on different subtypes, including vascular dementia, remains unknown. Moreover, dementia-protecting effect among cataract patients with common mental disorder (CMD) unclear. Methods Patients aged 65 or older diagnosed between 2012 and 2021 were included grouped based whether they underwent within 1 year diagnosis. Propensity-score matching was used balance baseline characteristics, Cox proportional hazards models applied assess incidence 5 years post-cataract groups. Subgroup analyses performed CMD status. Results After propensity-score matching, 75 757 both control significantly reduced (HR=0.677, 95% CI =0.638 0.719, p<0.001), particularly for Alzheimer’s disease (HR=0.643, CI=0.576 0.716, no significant (HR=0.968, CI=0.851 1.101, p=0.621). showed a reduction without (HR=0.666, CI=0.624 0.710, but protective those CMD, regardless Conclusion is linked lower especially disease, cataract. However, this diminished CMD.

Background: This study compares the cost-utility, visual acuity, and humanistic outcomes of phacoemulsification surgery performed during international outreach campaigns to in U.S. Objective: Humanitarian organizations frequently perform cataract surgeries underserved regions, yet these settings remain unexplored. aims compare acuity outcomes, quality-of-life cost with those Methods: retrospective review analyzed 344 cases from Women for World Health (W4WH) missions 305 consecutive academic practice lead surgeon W4WH US. The pre-operative (pre-op) post-operative (post-op) at day 1, best-corrected (BCVA) post-op month 1 were compared baseline. change was between two groups. Complication rates, per case, measures evaluated mission group developed world. Results: cohort had worse baseline than (1.36 logMAR vs. 0.50 logMAR, p < 0.0001) showed greater mean improvement (1.24 0.35 0.0001). Both cohorts achieved similar BCVA (0.13 logMAR).
