Abstract Purpose Cataracts, the leading cause of blindness, result in significant vision impairment and require surgical intervention. This study evaluates prevalence, complexity, complications cataracts long-term psychiatric hospital patients, who often face delayed diagnosis due to limited support systems. Methods interventional case series included all patients hospitalized for more than six months. Comprehensive ophthalmic examinations were conducted, cataract severity was documented. Patients considered surgery based on self-awareness or objective signs impairment. Standard preoperative postoperative care implemented, with anesthesia determined by patient cooperation. Results A total 608 screened. The most common diagnoses schizophrenia (n = 432) bipolar disorder 112). Clinically diagnosed 212 (34.9%). Cataract performed 192 eyes 110 82 undergoing bilateral surgeries at least a 4-week interval. 89 underwent intravenous sedation topical anesthesia, while 21 required general anesthesia. No instances posterior capsular rupture vitreous loss reported. mean corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) improved significantly from 0.76 ± 0.32 logMAR 0.26 0.15 (P 0.024) 65 cooperated evaluation. Conclusion Regular are essential timely chronic reducing improving mental health. Experienced surgeons can generally perform under local using phacoemulsification technique patients.

Cataracts are associated with a decline in both cognitive and visual functions. This study examines postoperative changes functions patients age-related cataracts, focusing on the differential effects of unilateral bilateral cataract surgeries these Additionally, evaluates function following surgery individuals mild impairment (MCI). A cohort (n = 35, 59 eyes) aged 60 years older (69.9 ± 7.0 years) cataracts who underwent or between May June 2024 was selected. Cognitive were evaluated preoperatively at 1 week, month, 3 months postoperatively. using Montreal Assessment (MoCA). Visual assessed binocular testing system based virtual reality (VR) technology, which low spatial frequency suppression, simultaneous vision, stereopsis, perceptual eye position under 3D viewing conditions without glasses. Based preoperative MoCA scores, classified into cognitively normal (MCI) groups. Patients demonstrated significant improvements postoperatively, compared to assessments (p < 0.05). Specifically, group MCI exhibited substantial time points outperformed throughout follow-up period In terms function, showed stereopsis measurements Both significantly improved after surgery. Background Cataract surgery has been shown to reduce the risk of developing dementia in future; however, its impact on different subtypes, including vascular dementia, remains unknown. Moreover, dementia-protecting effect among cataract patients with common mental disorder (CMD) unclear. Methods Patients aged 65 or older diagnosed between 2012 and 2021 were included grouped based whether they underwent within 1 year diagnosis. Propensity-score matching was used balance baseline characteristics, Cox proportional hazards models applied assess incidence 5 years post-cataract groups. Subgroup analyses performed CMD status. Results After propensity-score matching, 75 757 both control significantly reduced (HR=0.677, 95% CI =0.638 0.719, p<0.001), particularly for Alzheimer’s disease (HR=0.643, CI=0.576 0.716, no significant (HR=0.968, CI=0.851 1.101, p=0.621). showed a reduction without (HR=0.666, CI=0.624 0.710, but protective those CMD, regardless Conclusion is linked lower especially disease, cataract.
