Efficacy of an internet-based, therapist-guided cognitive behavioral therapy intervention for adolescents and young adults with body dysmorphic disorder: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract
Background
Body
dysmorphic
disorder
(BDD)
is
particularly
prevalent
yet
highly
understudied
and
undertreated
in
adolescence.
This
study
evaluates
the
efficacy
of
an
internet-based,
therapist-guided
cognitive
behavioral
therapy
(CBT)
for
adolescents
young
adults
with
BDD
compared
to
supportive
online
as
active
control
condition.
Methods
In
a
single-blind,
randomized
controlled
trial,
N
=
45
(aged
15–21
years)
all
genders
from
German-speaking
countries
were
assigned
12
sessions
internet-based
CBT
(iCBT)
or
weeks
therapy.
The
primary
outcome
was
change
expert-rated
symptom
severity
pre-
post-intervention
(Yale-Brown
Obsessive-Compulsive
Scale
Modified
Dysmorphic
Disorder,
BDD-YBOCS).
Secondary
outcomes
included
remission
responder
rate,
changes
delusionality
appearance
beliefs
(BABS),
self-rated
(FKS),
cognitions
(FKDK),
quality
life
(KINDL-R),
depressive
symptoms
(PHQ-9)
pre
post
4-week
follow-up.
Results
iCBT
more
efficient
than
on
BDD-YBOCS
(

=.002),
