Prior research on metacommunities has largely focused snapshot surveys, often overlooking temporal dynamics. In this study, our aim was to compare the insights obtained from metacommunity analyses based a spatial approach repeated over time, with spatio-temporal that consolidates all data into single model. We empirically assessed influence of variation in environment and connectivity structure tropical Mediterranean temporary ponds. Employing standardized methodology across both regions, we surveyed multiple freshwater taxa three time periods within same hydrological year ponds each region. To evaluate how environmental, influences vary between two approaches, used nonlinear partitioning generalized additive models. Overall, study underscores importance adopting analytics better understand processes shaping metacommunities. While suggested environmental factors had greater influence, analysis revealed primary driver influencing regions. Temporal effects were equally important as effects, suggesting significant role ecological succession structure.
