Predictive processing (PP) offers an intriguing approach to perception, cognition, but also appreciation of the arts. It does this by positing both a theoretical basis-one might say 'metaphor'-for how we engage and respond, placing emphasis on mismatches rather than fluent overlap between schema environment. Even more, it holds promise for translating metaphor into neurobiological bases, suggesting means considering mechanisms-from basic perceptions possibly even our complex, aesthetic experiences. However, while share excitement promise, history empirical or psychological aesthetics is permeated metaphors that have progressed understanding which tend elude translation concrete, mechanistic operationalization-a challenge can be made PP. We briefly consider difficulty convincing implementation PP via brief historical outline some developments in study art order show these ideas often anticipated they remained at level metaphorical difficult-to-measure concepts. Although scope, hope commentary will spur researchers reflect with aim explanations well-defined mechanisms future study. This article part theme issue 'Art, predictive processing: perspectives'.

Introduction Aesthetic emotions are a class of aroused by evaluating aesthetically appealing objects or events. While evolutionary aesthetics suggests the adaptive roles these emotions, empirical assessments lacking. Previous neuroscientific studies have demonstrated that visual stimuli carrying evolutionarily important information induce neural responses even when presented non-consciously. To examine importance aesthetic we conducted study using magnetoencephalography (MEG) to measure induced non-consciously portrait paintings categorised as biological and non-biological examined associations between ratings. Methods MEG pre-rating data were collected from 23 participants. The included analogue scales for object saliency , facial liking beauty scores, in addition ‘ biologi-ness ,’ which was used subcategorising into non-biological. continuous flash suppression paradigm consciously binocular presentation without flashing masks, while dichotomic behavioural obtained (beauty non-beauty). Time-frequency decomposed correlation analysis with scores each category. Results Behavioural revealed influenced showed spatiotemporally distributed low-frequency brain activities associated ratings, distinct categories conscious non-conscious conditions. Conclusion emotion holds significance humans. Neural pathways sensitive images arouse ways categories, further consciousness. Subjective fluency affects preference evaluation in daily objects through two routes: increasing (‘hedonic effect’) and amplifying valence effects on (‘amplifying effect’). Contrarily, empirical aesthetics suggest that contextual knowledge, the primary source of fluency, prevents valence-dependent appreciation, challenging effect model. Here, we examined dual for visual artworks with varying valence. We found increased weakened effects. Using an eye-tracking approach, also investigated cognitive mechanism bridging preference. hypothesized information facilitates controlled processing-related eye movement, this gazing behavior enhances While facilitated processing movement did not mediate its fluency. Although our findings motivate further research into complex interplay between style they elucidate art-specific affect-fluency-preference interactions.
