How to account for the power that art holds over us? Why do artworks touch us deeply, consoling, transforming or invigorating in process? In this paper, we argue an answer question might emerge from a fecund framework cognitive science known as predictive processing (a.k.a. active inference). We unpack how approach connects sense-making and aesthetic experiences through idea of ‘epistemic arc’, consisting three parts (curiosity, epistemic action aha experiences), which cast aspects inference. then show arcs are built sustained by provide with those satisfying tend call ‘aesthetic’. Next, defuse two key objections approach; namely, it places undue emphasis on component our encounters—at expense affective aspects—and closure uncertainty minimization (order)—at openness lingering (change). offers crucial resources open-ended, free playful behaviour inherent experiences. The upshot is promising but deflationary approach, both philosophically informed psychologically sound, opens new empirical avenues understanding encounters. Cultural and creative networks serve as essential environments that could foster innovation advancement within artistic research practice. This study investigates how formal contribute to strengthening transdisciplinary collaboration, interdisciplinary dialogue, societal impact of research. Leveraging grounded theory principles, the delves into ways in which these can provide fertile ground for exploring novel pathways across ontological, epistemological, methodological dimensions. Through analysis key categories themes emerging from empirical research, this highlights role cultural sector, particularly addressing discipline-specific challenges unlocking full potential inquiry. By shedding light on mechanisms through facilitate production dissemination knowledge, offers insights evolving landscape its broader impacts. The practical implications findings practitioners, policymakers, stakeholders are examined. Ultimately, underscore significance leveraging drivers transformative advancements community.

What psychological mechanisms underlie aesthetic judgements? An influential account known as the Hedonic Marking of Fluency, later developed into a Processing Fluency Theory Aesthetic Pleasure, posits that ease processing elicits positive feelings and thus enhances stimulus evaluations. However, theory faces empirical conceptual challenges. In this paper, we extend it by integrating insights from predictive frameworks (PPF) epistemic motivation model (EMM). We propose four extensions. First, fluency depends on perceivers' expectations—their internal world. Second, perceivers also form expectations about itself can experience surprising fluency. These come individual's history, their current task environment. Third, value but disfluency, reflecting non-directional goals. Fourth, have directional goals, preferring specific conclusions or belief content. Consequently, affective reactions depend whether satisfies those goals may override concerns change associated with review supporting evidence introduce novel predictions. By PPF EMM, our framework better capture established effects highlights limitations This article is part theme issue ‘Art, aesthetics processing: theoretical perspectives’.

Predictive processing (PP) offers an intriguing approach to perception, cognition, but also appreciation of the arts. It does this by positing both a theoretical basis-one might say 'metaphor'-for how we engage and respond, placing emphasis on mismatches rather than fluent overlap between schema environment. Even more, it holds promise for translating metaphor into neurobiological bases, suggesting means considering mechanisms-from basic perceptions possibly even our complex, aesthetic experiences. However, while share excitement promise, history empirical or psychological aesthetics is permeated metaphors that have progressed understanding which tend elude translation concrete, mechanistic operationalization-a challenge can be made PP. We briefly consider difficulty convincing implementation PP via brief historical outline some developments in study art order show these ideas often anticipated they remained at level metaphorical difficult-to-measure concepts. Abstract Haiku, the world’s shortest form of poetry, has usually been deemed ambiguous owing to its length. However, studies have shown that ambiguity lowers aesthetic evaluation a haiku, which contradicts belief is characteristic both haiku and art in general. One reason for this contradiction may be interaction with readers’ attributes, particular, their expertise—a theme considered important field psychology. Therefore, study, we had 20 experts novices evaluate low- high-ambiguity haikus, another group evaluated distinguished pilot study. The results revealed exhibited lower liking whereas demonstrated same degree high- low-ambiguity haikus. Additionally, perceived haikus than novices. This suggests higher because they were able process them more fluently based on knowledge experiences. Furthermore, interest mediated relationship between among only. In sum, appreciated different ways compared implications psychology cognitive science aesthetics art, where important, as well expertise school education, part curriculum.
