Abstract Two analytic traditions characterize fMRI language research. One relies on averaging activations across individuals. This approach has limitations: because of inter-individual variability in the locations areas, any given voxel/vertex a common brain space is part network some individuals but others, may belong to distinct network. An alternative identifying areas each individual using functional ‘localizer’. Because its greater sensitivity, resolution, and interpretability, localization gaining popularity, it not always feasible, cannot be applied retroactively past studies. To bridge these disjoint approaches, we created probabilistic atlas data for an extensively validated localizer 806 enables estimating probability that location belongs network, thus can help interpret group-level activation peaks lesion locations, or select voxels/electrodes analysis. More meaningful comparisons findings studies should increase robustness replicability

In everyday life, information from different cognitive domains-such as visuospatial attention, alertness and inhibition-needs to be integrated between brain regions. Early models suggested that completely segregated networks control these three domains. However, more recent accounts, mainly based on neuroimaging data in healthy participants, indicate tasks lead specific patterns of activation within the same, higher-order 'multiple-demand' network. If so, then a lesion critical substrates this common network should determine concomitant impairment all The aim present study was critically investigate hypothesis, i.e. identify focal stroke lesions can concomitantly affect inhibition. We studied an unselected sample 60 first-ever right-hemispheric, subacute patients using data-driven, bottom-up approach. Patients performed 12 standardized neuropsychological oculomotor tests, four per domain. A principal component analysis revealed strong relationship domains: 10 tests loaded first, component. Analysis neuroanatomical correlates approaches (i.e. voxel-based tractwise lesion-symptom mapping, disconnectome maps) provided convergent evidence association severe at intersection superior longitudinal fasciculus II III, frontal aslant tract and, lesser extent, putamen inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus. Moreover, with involving region were significantly impaired daily living cognition, which provides ecological validation our results. probabilistic functional atlas multiple-demand confirm potential patients' observed impairments function connectivity disruption. These findings show, for first time, white matter crossroad concurrent breakdown considered Our results support model, proposing operations depend collaborators their interaction, same underlying neural also extend hypothesis by showing (i) contribution network; (ii) intersection, crossed vast amount long-range tracts, many interconnect cortical areas vulnerability has clinical consequences; influence future rehabilitative approaches.

Abstract Language comprehension and the ability to infer others’ thoughts (theory of mind, ToM) are interrelated during development language use. However, neural evidence that bears on relationship between ToM mechanisms is mixed. Although robust dissociations have been reported in brain disorders, activations for contrasts target bear similarities, some overlap (Deen et al., 2015). We take another look at language-ToM by evaluating response network (Fedorenko 2010), as measured with fMRI, verbal non-verbal across 151 participants. Individual-subject analyses reveal all core regions respond more strongly when participants read vignettes about false beliefs compared control vignettes. we show these differences largely due linguistic confounds, no such effects appear a task. These results argue against cognitive processing ToM. In exploratory analyses, find responses social “periphery” network—right hemisphere homotopes areas bilateral angular gyri—but not selectively ToM-related may reflect general visual semantic processing.

This study investigated the role of working memory capacity (WMC) in metaphoric and metonymic processing Mandarin–English bilinguals’ minds. It also explored neural correlations between metaphor metonymy computations. We adopted an event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) design, which consisted 21 English dialogic sets stimuli 5 conditions: systematic literal, circumstantial metaphor, metonymy, all contextualized daily conversations. Similar fronto-temporal networks were found for figurative language patterns: superior temporal gyrus (STG) metaphorical comprehension, inferior parietal junction (IPJ) processing. Consistent brain regions have been identified previous studies homologue right hemisphere better WMC bilinguals. The degree to bilateral strategies that bilinguals with or larger vocabulary size resort is differently modulated by subtypes metonymies. In particular, when cuneus (where putamen contained) activated as higher-span filter out irrelevant information, resorting inhibitory control use. Cingulate activation has revealed bilinguals, reflecting their mental flexibility adopt subjective perspective critical items self-control. hoped this research provides a understanding Taiwan.
