In some species, the ability to acquire new vocalizations persists into adulthood and may be an important mediator of social interactions. While it is generally assumed that vocal learning undiminished throughout lifespan these open-ended learners, stability this trait remains largely unexplored. We hypothesize exhibits senescence, as typical complex cognitive traits, decline relates age-dependent changes in behaviour. The budgerigar ( Melopsittacus undulatus ), learner develops contact call types are shared with associates upon joining flocks, provides a robust assay for measuring effects ageing on ability. formed captive flocks 4 previously unfamiliar adult males same age class, either ‘young adults’ (6 mo−1 y) or ‘older (≥ 3 y), concurrently tracked structure interactions over time. Older adults exhibited decreased diversity, which related sparser weaker affiliative bonds observed older adults. adults, however, displayed equivalent levels plasticity convergence compared young suggesting many components maintained later learner.
