Abstract In humans, screams have strong amplitude modulations (AM) at 30 to 150 Hz. These AM correspond the acoustic correlate of perceptual roughness. bats, distress calls can carry AMs, which elicit heart rate increases in playback experiments. Whether modulation occurs fearful vocalisations other animal species beyond humans and bats remains unknown. Here we analysed pattern rats’ 22-kHz ultrasonic emitted a fear conditioning task. We found that number decreases during presentation conditioned stimuli. also observed AMs do occur rat vocalisations. are stronger stimuli, escape behaviour compared freezing. Our results suggest presence could reflect animal’s internal state related avoidance behaviour.
