People with aphantasia exhibit the inability to voluntarily generate or form mental imagery in their minds. Since term “aphantasia” was proposed by Zeman et al. 2015 describe this, it has gained increasing attention from psychiatrists, neuroscientists, and clinicians. Previous studies have mainly focused on definition, prevalence, measurement, its impacts individuals’ cognitive emotional processing, theoretical frameworks synthesizing existing findings, which contributed greatly our understanding of aphantasia. However, there are still some debates regarding conclusions derived research theories that were constructed various sources evidence. Building upon endeavors, current systematic review emphasizes future is much needed refine definition diagnosis aphantasia, strengthen empirical investigations at behavioral neural levels, more importantly, develop update theories. These multiple lines efforts could lead a deeper further guide researchers directions.

Aphantasia refers to the condition one is unable summon visual mental images in minds. However, whether aphantasia loses such ability completely or only consciousness for image generation a debated and unsolved issue. To address this question, present study aimed characterize voluntary (II) involuntary imagery (VI). W.S., woman aphantasia, her age-, IQ-, attention ability-matched control groups (gender-mixed gender-matched) were recruited assessed with four differential threshold tasks (DT). In three DTs, instructed create voluntarily involuntarily preceded DT task varying duration time (II-0.5s, VI-0.5s VI-6s). The other pure perceptual (baseline). Systematical impairments detected W.S. VI-6s: congruent trials, exhibited extremely lower accuracy rates than controls; incongruent deficit was evident difference of between baseline (DDT). no observed comparison controls II-0.5s tasks. All these results suggested that entangled creating voluntarily. As such, more resources would be required showed difficulty switching from distractor (mental images) following processing. On hand, may still preserve II abilities minds unconsciously. contribute our understanding suggesting individuals are not losing ability, but experience reduction absence spontaneous imagery.
