Abstract Animal colouration is fundamentally important for social communication within conspecifics to advertising threat competitors or fitness possible mates. Social status and animal are covarying traits that plastic in response dynamic environments. In the African cichlid, Astatotilapia burtoni , body behaviour have been extensively reported vary with rank. However, nature of interaction between these two poorly understood. We hypothesise pigmentation patterns could be linked behavioural repertoires underlying can resolved regions on cichlid plan. To test this hypothesis, we generated Territorial (T) Non-territorial (NT) males employed computer vision tools quantify visualise patterns/colour enrichment associated stereotyped T/NT male behaviour. report colour-behaviour interactions localised specific areas face colour morphs illustrating a more nuanced view pigmentation. Since morphological variation key drivers selection East Great Rift Lakes, surmise our data may translatable other lineages underline importance trait covariance sexual competition.
