Timely growth cessation before winter is crucial for the survival of perennial plants in temperate and boreal regions. Short photoperiod (SP) low temperature (LT) are major seasonal cues regulating cessation. SP, sensed leaves, initiates by downregulating FLOWERING LOCUS T 2(FT2) expression, but how LT regulates unclear. Genetic cell biological approaches identified a hybrid aspen EARLY 3(ELF3) ortholog with prion-like domain (PrLD) that undergoes LT-responsive phase separation as key mediator LT-induced In contrast acts independently FT2 downregulation targets AIL1-BRC1 transcription factor network hormonal pathways via ELF3 to induce Intriguingly, also functions SP-mediated leaves. Our work thus reveals previously unrecognized role coordinating photoperiodic enable robust adaptation change.
