Abstract With the advances in smartphone and tablet screens, as well their processing power software, mobile apps have been developed reporting to assess visual function. This review assessed those that evaluated scientific literature measure acuity, reading metrics, contrast sensitivity, stereoacuity, colour vision fields; these constitute just a small percentage of total number metrics available for tablets smartphones. In general, research suggests most can accurately mimic traditionally paper-based tests function, benefitting from more even illumination backlit screen aspects such multiple versions (to minimise memorisation) being on same equipment. Some also utilise in-built device sensors monitor working distance tilt. As consequences incorrectly recording function using this inform clinical management are serious, clinicians must check validity app before adopting it part practice.
