By using complementary experimental methods including in situ high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction and UV–Vis spectroscopy, the intricate connection between solvatochromism solvatomorphism has been elucidated a recent publication [Sobczak & Katrusiak (2024). IUCrJ, 11, 528–537]. The was demonstrated for an important pigment – Reichardt's dye with potential applications nonlinear optoelectronics molecular pressure sensor development.

ABSTRACT The 1 H‐ and 13 C‐NMR spectra of three substituted N‐ (4‐hydroxyphenyl)pyridinium perchlorates, precursors solvatochromic 4‐pyridiniophenolate betaines, were recorded in deuterated acetone, dimethylsulfoxide, acetonitrile, their spectral behavior these solvents was analyzed as evidence the solute–solvent interactions present solution. effect increasing orthogonality between phenolic pyridinium fragments clearly evident from obtained spectra, thus shedding light on ground‐state structures deprotonated derivatives with solvent.

ABSTRACT The 1 H and 13 C NMR spectra of the N ‐(3,5‐dichloro‐4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐ 2,4,6‐triphenylpyridinium perchlorate its deprotonated betaine 4‐(2,4,6‐triphenylpyridinio)‐2,6‐dichlorophenolate (Wolfbeis's E T (33) dye) were recorded in various solvents analyzed search solvent‐dependent shifts that characterize their solvatomagnetism, which was compared with well‐known UV–vis spectral behavior this important solvatochromic dye. Although phenolic precursor different correlated only poorly responses, they provided valuable information on specific structural features solute–solvent interactions are not available from spectra.
